History of Gift Giving during Christmas

Gift-giving around Christmas time dates way back. Many early cultures, such as the Romans and the Norse would celebrate the winter solstice. Part of these celebrations included festivals, music, feasts and gift giving. When Christianity first emerged, many of these existing seasonal customs were adopted into the religion, as a way to merge culture and religion.

Nowadays, the act of gift giving in religious terms, ties into the Christian story of the nativity. Three Wise Men travelled to see the infant Jesus and bestow upon him gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh. This gesture has since been adopted across the world's Christian cultures to celebrate the birth of Christ.

We've also got to mention Santa Clause. The 4th century Nikolaos of Myra was known for his fondness of giving people gifts. Nikolaos found so much joy in giving, that people remembered him for this. He was later appointed as a saint and eventually became known as Saint Nicholas.

Saint Nicholas and his generosity were recognised worldwide. Areas of Europe celebrate the feast day of Saint Nicholas in December. Saint Nicholas later evolved into who we now call 'Santa Claus,' the jolly, red suit wearing, white haired, pink-cheeked fellow. Riding his infamous reindeer sled, delivering gifts to all the children of the world in one evening.

A source of much wonderment and joy for children as they ponder whether they made the naughty or nice list that year.

Many of us can recall the awkward shopping centre Santa christmas photos we had taken as kids. The magic of leaving cookies and milk out for Santa on Christmas Eve. Or leaving carrots and water in the backyard for Rudolph and co to fuel up.
